Printing Hints:
HP Laserjet
Subject: Printing
Newsletter on an Hewlett Packard Laserjet 4
Date: Sat, 14 Feb 1998 13:04:58 EST

It took some futzing w/ my printer settings, but I got a clean copy at last.
[This memo refers to the Feb 98 newsletter, i.e. references to specific
pages]. I thought some readers might benefit from this if they are having any
difficulty printing; particularily from an HP 4 (or related) and give owners
of other printers some ideas of what to consider.
I have an HP 4 (original, not a 4L or 4S, etc.) w/ 10 MB in the printer and 64
MB in the system. Initially, I would get a Print Overrun error (code 21) and
only half of the banner on page 1 would print. Interestingly, before I
changed the printer settings, pages 2-4 and 8 would print fine, but pages 1
and 5-7 had the problem w/ print overrun. I thought this curious, as pages 2
& 3 had "graphics" ( photos, scanned images, and printed OK) and 5 & 6
did not
have "graphics" (i.e. text only). Note- I put "graphics" in quotes, as
I
assume under Acrobat Reader everything is displayed as graphics.
Now -- the settings for an HP 4 that work best for printting:
First, you have to turn on Page Protection to avoid getting the Print Overrun
error. I had not needed to futz w/ my printer settings in a while so I could
not initially remember how to do this. Interestingly, if I selected Print,
Print Setup, Properties, from the Acrobat print menu (via the printer icon)
and then clicked the Device Options tab -- the Page Protection option did NOT
appear. When I went to the Win 95 Start button, Settings, Printers window and
right clicked my printer icon to get to Properties -- then selected the Device
Options tab -- the Page Protection option was there. Note: when I went to
Properties from Acrobat, the Page Protection option did not exist at all (as
opposed to being there, but unavailable as a choice, i.e. dimmed).
Second, under Properties, Graphics tab - you must use raster
graphics setting
(and not vector graphics) to get some of the "graphics" to print. The
RCB
logo and map on page 1 would not print as a vector graphic (you got black
rectangles). [For those wanting a short explanation - vector graphics print
faster, as they are sent to the printer as a series of polygons - when the
'wrong' (sic) type of image is sent for vector printing it defaults to a
polygon of the space the image occupies, a black rectangle]. Resolution is
best at 600 dpi, but if you have memory problems, you should drop down to 300
dpi (or if you want faster printing). The results at 300 dpi are very close
to 600 dpi, - I choose the 600 dpi setting as I need that for some other
things I print and don't want to have to keep changing the setting. Set the
Dithering to Coarse (which is recommended for 300 dpi or greater) . The
photos come out best at this setting. Intensity setting is something you can
futz with to get optimal shading, I just leave my setting in the middle, as I
don't want to have to adjust settings all the time.
Third, under Fonts tab, True Type fonts option -- Print True Type as graphics
-- or -- Download True Type as outline soft fonts -- worked fine. Download
TrueType as bit mapped soft fonts -- would give me a memory error message, but
still print just fine. Do what works best for you.
