John Day Rally 2016

After a 2 year hiatus, we’re going to have a semi-organized club ride to the Chief Joseph Rally in John Day, Oregon. The route is in the planning stages but we’ll try to go through Lassen Park if the road is open. Plenty of snow this year so that might be pretty iffy. Plan on leaving (clutch out, gas tank full, bladder empty) at 8:00 AM from Susie's on Thursday, June 16.
Thursday night we will bed down in Lakeview, Oregon at the Best Western..about $115
for 2 beds 2 persons, $90 for 1bed 1 person. (541-947-2194) or Executive Inn..about $75 2 beds, 2 persons, $65 for 1 bed, 1 person.(541-947-2201) Rates quoted assume some kind of discount. (AAA, AARP, Military, etc) Make your own reservations. There’s a pretty good Mexican restaurant next door where we have a group feed Thursday night. Friday morning we're far less organized and head out whenever to John Day. Your Friday dinner is included in the registration fee so you want to arrive before 5:00 PM. (It's only about 3 to 4 hours from Lakeview to John Day)
After the rally you're pretty much on your own for the ride home. I tend to leave at O'dark thirty and ride straight through. It's about 600 miles if you take US-395 to Reno then I-80 to Sacramento. John Day is in the center of some great riding and the rally site features good grass camping, actual HOT showers, and entertainment that is something besides LOUD. Did I mention that your registration fee includes dinner on both Friday and Saturday nights? Hope to see a lot of you there. Questions? The road through Lassen opened yesterday, 6/12 to vehicles. Had a great ride there yesterday. Still a lot of snow at the higher elevations but the road was completely clear. The current forecast for later this week includes a chance of rain but the temperatures will be quite comfortable. Have a great ride.

Thanks for the update, Chuck. We will definitely be traveling through Lassen on the way to Lakeview. We might take a quicker route to there rather than through Quincy. We'll talk Thursday at breakfast. Remember, clutch out at 8:00 AM.

I am definitely still on! We probably will have to go around Lassen (too late to buy snow tires) and we will need to bring our rain suits. No bad weather, only bad planning or bad equipment!

Unfortunately I have to cancel also. Went out to load my RT and it's leaking brake fluid from the master cylinder. Considered Riding the S bike but it's not that great in rain and long straight highways. Cancelled my room in Lakeview. Hope that you guys have a great ride.

I have been watching the weather forecasts for a few days. Rain clears in Alturas to Lakeview during the afternoon Thursday. Same for John Day Friday. Supposed to be great weather Sat. and Sunday.

The Hwy 89 corridor from about Quincy north is the most unsettled.

I am going to play around with maps tonight, in light of the weather forecasts, to see if there is a way to thread the needle, heading north east from Red Bluff or Redding. I haven't ridden east on 70, 36, 299 or 41 (44?) in years.

Glad to see RCB folks going to John Day. We will be there too. Stopping tonight to celebrate our son's birthday. Looking at the weather we will head over 299, should be below the snow line.

It was a great rally!!! Weather was almost perfect -- except for rain all night on Friday and a coating of frost on everything on Sunday morning. Lynn Yelland won $100+ in the 50/50 and Mike Mayer won a set of tires (from Ozzie's) as a door prize. We had about a dozen RCB'ers there and a good time was had by all!

We learned sumthin' this trip y'all. If ya go fast enough ya don't get wet. Trust me. The only time we got wet was when we weren't moving.

Since others are too bashful, the group included Mike Led, Steveo, Flash Gordon, Al, Ray T aka Mr. T aka Rock Slayer (learned from Ken), and Mike. Jay and Lynn also rode over.
