Help. Wondering why no power.

Postby Erivera » Mon May 16, 2016 11:42 pm

So I went to Park City, UT on Thursday via US 50. No major issues. spent the night in Delta. I left Friday morning for Park City and noticed that my GPS attached to the bike started not charging and eventually lost power. I reached my destination in Park city without issues and rode again Saturday. I can feel a bit of hesitation In lower gears but thought not much of it. Left Sunday early morning and just took 80. First gas in Wendover, no problems. My initial plan was to gas up in Elko but thought I can still push a bit more so I gas up in Carlin. Nearing Carlin, the ABS light suddenly came on twice briefly. Thought nothing of it. After gas and restroom stop, I started the bike, brief spark and then no power. No dashboard lights. I looked, there was a faint headlight that then disappeared. Went to the truck stop and no one can help. Called AAA for a tow and I have 200 mile limit IF they can find anyone willing. Still could not get me to Reno. Got hold of someone from BMW MOA anonymous book. Great guy - Chuck - drove from Elko and helped me together with a homeless former electrician. They charged my Shorai battery using cables attached the the SUV. It charged, turned on and by the time we put everything back and geared up, one failed crank and again power loss. Chuck drove me back to Elko, I bought an AGM battery, went back to Carlin, attached it and went fine. Said thank you's and goodbye's. Bike felt a bit rough but running. Stopped at Winnemucca and Fernley. At Fernley, it balked but started anyway. Light was still OK. At around Colfax, the ABS red light would come on and off intermittently. At a stoplight in Sierra College, the dashboard went dead but bike was still running and had to put more throttle and light in the dash came back. I had to make rolling stops with high rev to make sure the engine will not quit, all the while with the ABS light lighting up. I reached home at 1120 PM and the bike died without me turning it off.

The bike just came from major preventive maintenance in February and aside from brake rotors needing elective replacement, everything was OK. I also specifically asked if the Shorai battery was still ok and was told that it was. I have not ridden it more than 1K miles since that major service.

What could be the problem? Diagnosis? Treatment? Cost?

Charging system issues?

Bike is still at home waiting to be taken back to the motorcycle hospital.

Thanks in advance and sorry for the long history.

Sounds like your charging system is "KAPUT"

Cost to repair? BMW is short for Break My Wallet.

Sounds like MAYBE the battery issue is resolved. I would spend a few minutes with a multimeter to see what the charging system is doing while at idle and higher. Simple procedure, and will give you a good idea what's going on.
Call me Ernesto, I can bring my multimeter over and check it for you.

Thanks a lot everyone for the input. Mike, I will take you up on the offer and I can probably even bring the bike over to your place. I charged the new AGM battery and tender shows a green light. I will just have to find a time good for both of us.

Ernesto..quick check if you have a volt meter. With the engine running connect a volt enter to the battery. Rev to above 1500 RPMs and the meter should read between 13.8 and 14.2 volts if the alternator is working properly. Anything less and you have a charging system issue.

Stuck it with a multimeter. No charging. Suspect rectifier/regulator. Stator. Definitely broke.

Thanks a lot Mike for the help. I was able to get it to A$S. Looks like there is also something mechanical going on with a loud knocking sound, aside from the electrical issue you diagnosed.

Anytime Ernesto. Replace the chain and sprockets and the sound will disappear. The chain has a link that is binding.

Bruce, the person who helped me in Elko has a black Charger Hellcat he is selling. Let me know if you are interested and I can connect you with him. He also has a Shelby Cobra but that is not for sale.
