The RCB Spring Classic will be held once again at the beautiful Trinity KOA on May 13th-15th (http://koa.com/campgrounds/trinity-lake/).

Camping fees - $10

Cabins come with a full bathroom and kitchen and linens are provided. Call 800-562-7706 in order to reserve a cabin. Ensure you tell them you are with the River City Beemers in order to receive your group discount. No need to call if you are tent camping.

This year we will be having a chili feed for dinner on Saturday.

We will have access to the Pavilion for a meeting/hangout area as well as the Clubhouse in case of inclement weather.

I have had messages from a few folks letting me know that KOA isn't aware of the event and that hey can't get a discount for the cabins. I talked to the KOA host directly in December and she knows we're coming. As soon as I hear back from her I'll let everyone know that they are ready for the cabin reservations.

I just saw on the news that a section of highway 3 north of Weaverville collapsed due to the rains. Something to keep track of before we go. Hopefully it will be fixed soon, but you never know with the weather up there.

There's a post on the BARF forum with a picture of the road, or lack of. BIG HOLE. Just saw it on 13 news. Nasty. There is supposed to be a detour around it.

The fix may not be in time. Just heard on the news that it could be two months for repairs to be complete. Maybe if you get a real fast start you could play Evil Kenivel(sp?). :lol:

There are several options to get to the KOA grounds. Some of them make it a much longer trip but will put you on some fantastic roads. Some routes require quite a bit of off road travel. I don't think a contractor has been selected yet for the repairs but the word is they plan to work them 24 hours a day so the repairs might be done in time for the event.

Just got off the phone with the camp host Verona. She informed me that you can call the KOA direct at 530-266-3337 any time after April 14th to reserve your cabin with the discount. I also talked to her about the road conditions up there and she said there were two routes leading to the KOA. The main route will be I5 to Yreka and back down highway 3. Another is French Gulch road which includes about 6 miles of graded logging road. I would only advise that for the adventurous GS folk. She says Trinity Lake is about 60% of capacity with snow pack in the mountains to help fill it up a bit more. Estimated time to finish fixing the hole is 5/20 so who know, maybe Caltrans will be on their game and the road will be opened in time. Not holding my breath on that one though. Please sign up ASAP so I can get an accurate headcount for food and to let Verona know how many to expect.

Bob, I asked Verona about Eastside road and am waiting a response.

Here's an update from Verona. Looks like we get to save a bit of money camping while helping battling cancer!

"Hi, Rick-
I have news for your group in re to the discount.

The weekend of your stay is called “Care Camps Big Weekend”. It’s a national KOA project to help children with cancer. Campers who stay as paying guests on Friday, May 13 will receive their stay on Saturday, May 14 for just $10. The $10 is collected automatically as a part of the first night and will go directly to the KOA Care Camps Trust. This money will be used to send kids battling cancer to one of 95 specialized summer camps throughout North America.

So, your group members are staying for 2 nights paying a standard rate for the 1st night but paying only $10.00 for the second night. This is better than the discount that we applied in the past.

Currently, I see two of your members – Royce Krieger and Michael Robles - already reserved for cabins. I’m holding 5 more cabins. Four are 1 bedroom and one is a 2 bedroom. The 2 bedroom is the only 2 bedroom left for those dates so please let me know if you’ll need more 1 bedrooms."

Looking at the map, I think I have found an alternate route to get there. Instead of heading all the way up to Yreka, there is another road outside of Weed that leads to Highway 3.

The road you are indicating is paved all the way but is a little rough and potholed in places. Any bike should be able to make it. The road is named Steward Springs Rd. on the Gazelle side. The road does not get snow plowed and I was unable to get through the last time I tried but that was earlier this year. Don't know the current condition of the snow.

There is also a pretty rough all dirt road that you can access going past the entrance to Castle Crags. It also connects to Highway 3. Even without snow this route can be challenging to those without fairly good off road skills.

You can also get to Callahan or Etna off of Highway 96 but that would be quite a long way around for Sacramento area riders but might be an option if anyone is coming from the west side.

Chuck is correct. I have ridden the paved route he suggested and it is fine for all bikes. All rural roads have been neglected and it is no worse than most.

I also have ridden the dirt road from Dunsmuir / Crags to Hwy 3. It was easy on the Husky 610, and our guide was riding a GS Adventure with no problems. That was 2-3 years ago in the fall in the midst of drought years. If anyone is contemplating that route, I would be prepared to deal with washouts since we have had a pretty good winter and tree limbs in the road. There still might be snow on north facing sections or in canyons at higher elevations. Snow line was about 6000 feet a couple weeks ago around Quincy, but probably has gotten higher since then.

You also can get to Hwy 3 from the west side via the Forks of the Salmon. That will be a very long ride from Sacto in one day, but can be done. The Forks is a one lane road on very steep hillsides so be very careful. It is a very nice ride though. If you have to pull over for a car, pull over on the hillside of the road. I would try to get local info on the Forks to assure there have not been any landslides or washouts. I have a GPS route / track if anyone is interested.

Does anyone know whether SR 106 from French Gulch is paved? It goes through to Hwy 3 on the north end of the lake from the east side of the lake.

SR 106 from French Gulch is paved most of the way. There is a few miles of dirt/gravel. It is usually fairly well maintained and is actually better than many portions of the paved sections.

I asked well traveled riding Buddies for advice. Greg G said:

"Stewart springs/forest service 42N17 is paved to hwy 3. It's single lane most of the way."

Just have to be wary of potential snow. If we do not get any significant snow between now and then, the snow line should be above 7000 + feet.

Just got off the phone with my cousin in Douglas City and he states, there is a detour around the Highway 3 blasted road deal. It is graded and rocked with 24hr. pilot car escort through it. Might take a half hour or so of waiting but the detour does exist. I believe I will go this route. We have an option. See ya there!
Oh, no big RV's or trailers I guess. No problem for cars or bikes.

A group of riders will depart Susie's at 9:00 a.m. Friday, bound for the Trinity Ctr. KOA. CAPT. KEN will be leading the charge.
I will be going 65/99 to Red Bluff. Catch 36 W. out of Red Bluff to either 3 N. Or Wildwood Rd. To 299 W. To Weaverville. Take 3 N. to Trinity Ctr. KOA.
CAPT. KEN will be in charge of his route. Imagine it will be similar. We shall see!

For those that tent camped, I failed to collect for the fees from everyone. It's a whooping $5 a night. Please make payments at the next meeting.
