April Coastal Classic to Fortuna & the Redwoods

Postby terryleeca » Sat Feb 13, 2016 1:08 pm

The April Coastal Classic this year is heading NORTH to the Avenue of the Giants and Lost Coast areas of the Redwoods. So mark you Calendars for April 22nd, 23rd & 24th (Fri, Sat & Sun).

We'll be staying at the Super 8 Motel in Fortuna, CA which is just a stones throw, or stagger for some of us, from the Eel River Brewing Company. Contact Karen at the Super 8 at 1-707-725-2888 to make your room reservations and mention your with River City Beemers. They have limited rooms set aside for RCB members and their guests. Book early, rooms will fill up fast.

Made my reservation, just wondering though, were we supposed to get a group rate? The rate I got quoted was the same as reserving online with super 8....?

Bob, I was told we were getting a group rate but I'll call Karen this week and see what we can work out. Now that more people have been making reservations. Also will as about cancellation policy in case the weekend gets rained out. Terry

PS
I talked with Karen today about room rates and apparently we have the group rating price per room of $89.99 plus tax a night. If you're able to book cheaper Go For it. The cancellation policy is 24 hours in advance to avoid any charges.

FYI Jack.... The plan right now is there will be a group ride up on Friday morning. Leaving Black Bear Dinner (2700 El Centro Rd, Sac) over by 80 and West El Camino at 8:00 am (Clutch Out). A GPS route will be posted before the ride. I want to do a test ride over before posting the route.

All right Gentlemen, Weather Wise it looks like a Wash Out weekend, pretty much rain all three days, Fri, Sat & Sun (50% - 70% chance). Please respond if you are still wanting to do a group ride over leaving Sat at 8 am. If no response, I'll cancel the group ride over and my motel reservations by Wednesday this week.

I would like to go but my room mate canceled out on me. I could cancel or change my room from a double to a single but it would have to be done before 2 PM today. After seeing Roy's post & Mike Miller's post I tried to call Terry Lee at the phone listed on the forum but it must have been changed (can't be completed as dialed).
Anyone else interested in going Friday as planned? Anyone going Saturday instead?

The RCB group ride to Fortuna will leave Saturday instead of Friday to avoid the rain & thundershowers forecasted for Friday. Departure (Clutch Out & Full Tank) will be 8:00 am from the Black Bear diner (2700 El Centro Rd) just off Hwy 80 & W El Camino (Exit 85).
Karen at Super 8 in Fortuna (1-707-725-6607) asked you give her a ring ASAP if you'll be changing you room bookings.
GPS route and directions are posted on the site's Routes & Sheets directory under File "Coastal Classic 2016".

Well Jack, had a bit of rain on the way up, route was great from Middletown chevron up, watch for some gravel washed unto the road though, from the rains. No Snow or ice, 40 miles from Fortuna Sun came out for Ave. of the Giants, truely surreal, road steaming, giant redwoods, all the green glowing and the shafts of sunlight coming through the trees was epic.

Had a great weekend, Samoa cookhouse was delicious, sampled some of Lost Coast and Eel River breweries finest. Brought home way too much cheese from Loleta Cheese factory and some BBQ sauce to boot. Enjoyed the Ferndale Victorian architecture. Unfortunately the cider houses were closed or couldn't find them....grin.

Dinner at Eel River Brewery was warm and friendly, those who made it enjoyed copious amounts of liquid bread and appetizers, it truly was within stumbling distance of the hotel,....

Thanks Terry for organizing this event and leading the Hwy 36 return. Missed all of those who couldn't make it, looking forward to next time.

Thanks Terry for putting this ride together.

Except for a few sprinkles, the riding was awesome. Good to see the creeks and rivers flowing, and everything green. Eel River beer is just as good as I remember it.

Cheers!

Just to be clear. It was 100% rain when I left the hotel. It was rain or wet until I got to Hwy3 & 36 was clear all the way home. In didn't wimp out it was I couldn't ride 299 and forks of the salmon, and sawyer bar.
