Importing Garmin gpx files with MapSource

Here is a step-by-step procedure to download a Garmin gpx file.
Right-click on the file to download, and select “Save target as…” as shown below.

A dialog box like the one below should appear. Navigate to the folder where your Garmin files are normally stored. If you use MapSource it should be “My Garmin.”

Internet Explorer will probably suggest naming it with the extension “xml”, which would cause problems loading the route with MapSource, so you should change the “xml” to “gpx” before saving it.

Once you’ve downloaded (saved) the file, fire up MapSource and open the file.

Once you’ve loaded the file you’ll need to Recalculate Route before sending it to your Garmin unit.

Click on the Transfer to Unit icon to upload the route info to the Garmin unit.

You can upload to the Garmin unit if you have it connected to your computer, or, if you pull the memory card from the unit and insert it into a card reader slot on your computer, you can upload it there.

Disconnect the Garmin unit from your computer and make sure it starts up normally. If you uploaded the route data to your memory card, re-insert it into the Garmin unit and turn it on. It should automatically find the new route data and ask you if you want to import them.
If there are Waypoints in the file, import them first, then import the route or routes.
Eat. Ride. Repeat.
