Seeking sage advice on 1150GS preventative maintenance

Postby Kim J. » Tue Jan 20, 2015 11:09 am

I’ve had my 2000 1150GS for 7 years. It currently has about 74,000 miles on it (50,000 of which I put on). As much as I’d like a newer 1200GS with fewer miles, one’s not in the budget, nor do I see one in the near future.

With that in mind, I’m looking for sage advice from former (or current) 1150GS owners on what preventative maintenance items (beyond valve adjust, brakes, lube changes, battery, etc.) that I could/should perform that would help carry the old girl into her golden years and hopefully allow me to take some of the longer trips.

I’m thinking along the lines of spline lube, alternator belt, pivot bearings, wheel bearings, clutch slave etc.

Things I’ve already accomplished: speedo cable and drive; left side cam tensioner; fork seals; braided brake lines; oil indicator glass; final drive (2 times) before I bought her.

Any thoughts/suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Kim J. – the other Kim.

If you haven't ever put an alternator belt on it's overdue. I think it's every 24000 miles. If you do a spline lube you may want to replace the clutch while you've got it apart. Wheel bearing, if you check them when you put on new tires and they're not loose, they should be ok. They are sort of cheap to replace though.

Yep, if you haven't, replaced the alt. belt. Easy. If you check splines, I would at least check the clutch plates for wear. You are already there. Heard of people wasting a clutch at 15k. These folks need to get a Prius. Pretty tough clutches really, if you don't slip the hell out of them. Good luck Kim!

Kim, this is a shameless plug for my employer, A&S BMW Motorcycles:
Go to Beemer Boneyard's site if you must and get the price(s) for the stuff you need. Then bring them to our shop so we can match it. Chances are we'll have your parts in stock and then you don't wait for 'em you won't have to pay to ship them. Just sayin'...

What is the percentage of Mikes to total club membership? If I don't know or forgot a member's name I just call him Mike with some confidence I'll be right.

Kim,
When u r changing ur alt. belt u probably should check the wiring to the Hall Effect Sensor. The insulation on the wires can go bad and give you problems in wet conditions. 15 yrs. I would give it a look see. They can be rewired if need be. Hope mine is ok! It's 14 yrs. old.!
