Too much Sunocol race fuel

Postby RocklinMike » Sun Mar 09, 2014 4:57 pm

Ok. If you read the discussion in regard to my over fueling mishap during the ride yesterday, then you are up to speed. If not, the long and short of it is that I was fueling and glanced back at the fuel pump for a bit and found that my bike was suddenly transformed into the EXXON Valdez. Fuel everywhere. Obvious malfunction of the cutoff feature for the pump. This has happened to me twice. It will not happen again as I was considering the possibility of going home on a hook. After fueling the bike it would not fire. Crank, crank and crank, nothing. Thankfully my battery was up to the task. Opened the fuel cap and let the excess fuel drain out the vent tube. After what seemed like an eternity, the bike finally fired. This did not make any sense as all I was really doing was trying to get 5 gals. of fuel into a smaller tank. Couldn't make sense of it. Where did the excess fuel go, and what did it do? Don't know. I did make it home but I was doubtful for a bit. If you have the charcoal canister on your bike, be VERY careful not to over fuel as it will go right to the canister and render your bike possibly not up to the task of making it home. So......pay no attention to the pump and all your attention to the fueling at the tank. Yesterday was an epiphany for me. DON'T TRUST THE NOZZLE TO DO IT'S JOB. I hope this opens other folks eyes to this possibility. Drove tractor/trailers for 27 yrs. Pumped a bit of fuel in my day and never have I experienced this. Oh...and if your bike has a battery buried deep in the bowels of the bike, do a mod so you can jump it roadside. jmho.

Actually JAAAAAACK, for ME, I felt like I was torqued down fairly well for ME. But then again nobody has ever accused me of not being tightly wrapped. It's the way I roll! I wonder if there is some dude with all his stuff jammed inna shopping cart cruzin' around Williams with an expensive E-Cig.

Mike:

Sorry to hear about your troubles with gas. Actually, you were very lucky --- usually when some idiot overfills the tank on a bike like yours it knocks the carburetors completely out of alignment and then the chain has to be retightened! Call me the next time it happens and I will do the necessary to get you back on the road.

Cheers,
Gordy

Gordy, did you not learn anything on tech day? They're belts, not chains!

By the way MIIIIIKKKKEEE, there is no such thing as Sunocol race fuel. The closest I could Google was SunocAl, who relates, "Hello I am Sunocal, the Shoyru, I love to fly around with my wings so I can soar among the clouds and look down upon Neopia."
I guess that's "motorcycle related", I've said that many times myself.

Looking back at Rocklin Rick's latest.........."belts" not "chains"??? Sounds a little kinky to me. Just sayin'......

Excuse me your Eminence. Not an easy reference to find. I grew up on the east coast where Sunoco was king, and still fuels NASCAR. But Mike did stop at the Shell-it has a yellow sign with red letters. Sunoco is a yellow sign with blue letters. Please forgive my unpardonable ignorance.

Now Jack,
Did I forget to include a smiley or wink? You should know I'm just funnin' ya. :) :)
Funny, I just happened to be looking at the Thunderhill page earlier, and remembered seeing that Sunoco blurb. They used to feature 76 high-octane gas, but I guess they switched.

They had Sunoco 260 from the 'Blend-o-matic pump. But I couldn't afford it...it was 47 cents per gallon, fer cryin' out loud.

One pump with eight selectable grades of fuel

Yep, it was Shell allright! My reference to Sunoco was that it was supposed to be a PIT STOP. Not a fuel spewing, fuel leaking, no running, half hour bitch fest!

.......one half hour is a really piss poor time for a pit stop! My crew is usually able to complete a pit stop in about 9-11 seconds (max!) and that includes adjusting the carbs and tightening the chain......
