Even though this is a "Do it yourself" style ride, we think it's a good idea to know how many we are going to have along with us. So add your name to the list if you're coming along, and you should make reservations soon at the motels as it is high tourist season in July.

Cowboys,
Leaving my son/family from Crater Lake, I will be in Panguitch, 9-16th, residing in the Adobe Sands Motel. The Red Rock Rally and surroundings were too much to pass up. I will check your motel to dine together, RCB style. Have a great, safe ride.

I'll be joining you Southwest tourers in Blanding on Wednesday the 16th. Coming up after a few days in New Mexico for my mom's 90th birthday. Anybody in need of someone to share the cost of a room for that night before I reserve a room for myself?

Thought some of you going on the Southwest Tour might be interested in a little history and trivia.

The section of US491 from Monticello, UT to Cortez, CO was part of US666 until 2003. It was the last section of the highway to be renamed. The sections in Arizona were renamed to US191 earlier.

Approx. time period North terminus South terminus
1926-1938 Cortez, CO Gallup, NM
1938-1970 Cortez, CO Douglas, AZ
1970-1992 Monticello, UT Douglas, AZ
1992-2003 Monticello, UT Gallup, NM

Here is some other interesting information from a self guided tour listed on an Arizona web site.
Arizona High Country Devil's Highway Tour
Duration: 3 days
Distance: 750 miles
Longest Ride: 265 miles
Highest Elevation: 9,400 ft.
Highlights:
Payson, Show Low, Springerville, Alpine, Mogollon ghost town,
Devil's Catwalk, Clifton, Morenci Mine,
Devil's Highway (450 major curves and 1,000 total curves in 93 miles),
Fort Apache, Salt River Canyon, Globe, Miami, Superior and more...

If you are interested in more history/trivia links follow:

http://www.fhwa.dot.gov/infrastructure/us666.cfm
http://www.usends.com/60-69/666/666.html

And of course, there is always google.

The only reason I looked any of this up is that I road the section of US666 from Monticello, UT to Cortez, CO in 2003 when I did my own Southwest Tour on my way to Denver, and remember seeing the highway signs. So when I say US491 on the route I had to check it out.

There is a lot of beautiful country along the route we are taking and I'm looking forward to riding it again!

Hope you enjoy,
Larry Klein

Ditto - Nice job John. I found myself wasting way too much time at work trying to figure out on Google Maps which stretch of the road some of the canyon videos were taken.

The scenery reminds me of a week-long geology field trip to the Colorado Plateau during college many years ago. I admire your perseverance for moving on and not stopping at every scenic overlook and geologic point of interest.

Question: Where did you have your cam mounted.. or did you have a pillion taking the videos?

Hi Kim,

Sony Exmore HD cam mounted on right side of helmet. Easier to work with and smaller than a Go-PRO.
