Chief Joseph Rally

On Wednesday we ride to dinner and on Saturday we ride to breakfast. Those and any other rides are coordinated and (sometimes) reported here.

Chief Joseph Rally

After a 3 year hiatus, we’re going to have a semi-organized club ride to the Chief Joseph Rally in John Day, Oregon. The route is in the planning stages but we’ll try to go through Lassen Park. That road is frequently still closed by snow in mid June but with the winter we’re having this year, who knows? Plan on leaving (clutch out, gas tank full, bladder empty) at 8:00 AM from Susie's on Thursday, June 12.
Thursday night we will bed down in Lakeview, Oregon at the Best Western..about $110 for 2 beds.. (541-947-2194) or Executive Inn..about $70 for 2..(541-947-2201) There's a pretty good Mexican restaurant next door where we have a group feed Thursday night. Friday morning we're far less organized and head out whenever to John Day. Your Friday dinner is included in the registration fee so you want to arrive before 5:00 PM. (It's only about 3 to 4 hours from Lakeview to John Day)
After the rally you're pretty much on your own for the ride home. I tend to leave at O'dark thirty and ride straight through. It's about 600 miles if you take US-395 to Reno then I-80 to Sacramento. John Day is in the center of some great riding and the rally site features good grass camping, actual HOT showers, and entertainment that is something besides LOUD. Did I mention that your registration fee includes dinner on both Friday and Saturday nights? Hope to see a lot of you there. Questions? Call Gary Stofer 916-966-7910 or here’s a link to the rally website: bmwro rally

If you have yet to go to a rally, or have not yet travelled far on your bike, this is an excellent opportunity to do so. You ride up with a group that is familiar with the route and destination, get to attend a really good rally, and it's a mildly challenging day's ride home (but nowhere near Iron Butt challenging!). I would encourage any one who's interested to go ahead and plan for it, you'll love it.

Just a reminder, there is a $10 discount for Chief Joseph pre-registration until June 1. Ken Caruthers has posted route sheets and GPS files on the Route Sheets & Garmin Files page. There are two routes shown for the first day. We would prefer to go through Lassen Nat Park if the road is open. Sign up below if you want to ride with us leaving from Susie's or we can meet up with you somewhere along the route.

I checked yesterday and found that the road through Lassen is open and should remain that way unless there is an unusual late Spring snowstorm. There's a brand new visitors center at the southwest entrance which has a restaurant so that is planned for our lunch stop.

I've got some good news, and some bad news. My home has been on the market since October. Just sold. Buyer wants to move close of escrow up to 6/16. I'm not normally a back-er out-er but I got a ton to do before then. So I must beg off Chief Joseph.

Looks Like decent weather boy's. A little cooler for John Day this time of year.

Mike and I will hook up with the gang in Nevada City after the left turn on Hwy 20 towards Downieville.

Gary..... Is Leave time from Roseville still 8am?

Yes, 8:00 am. Ken's route sheets time the route pretty closely. See you at the 20/49 separation.

As we're enduring another hot, hot day, be aware that it can be quite cool in the mornings in eastern Oregon. Expect lows Friday in the mid-forties at Lakeview. If you leave John Day early Sunday morning you can expect lows in the mid-thirties in Seneca which is south of John Day on 395

Have a room available at Best Western just up the street from the fairgrounds if anybody wants it.
