Trinity Lake Rendevous

On Wednesday we ride to dinner and on Saturday we ride to breakfast. Those and any other rides are coordinated and (sometimes) reported here.

Well the Trinity Lake recon mission was a success this weekend. Mike, Ray and I rode a little over 800 miles Saturday and Sunday to scout out the KOA campsite, roads, and the town of Trinity Center.

We were fortunate enough to meet with the camp host at the KOA and they gave us a quick tour of the area. The group site is nice and roomy with plenty of grassy areas and shade and is right next to the water. Each site has a fire ring as well. Cabins are right next to the group tent area and looked nice from the outside each including a nice deck out back. There is a snack bar by the main entrance and they server burgers and dogs and the such. We have access to a large pavilion in case of inclement weather. Cell phone coverage at the campsite was excellent but pretty sketchy elsewhere.

The town of Trinity Center is pretty small with a single gas station and mini-market. There are a couple of small diner type restaurants there and one pizza place about 8 miles up north in Coffee Creek that was highly recommended. If you forgot any big ticket items at home, Weaverville is 30 miles south of Trinity Center and should have anything you need.

For those of you that have never been in that part of the world, you're in for a treat. The roads and scenery in the area are spectacular. We are planning a Saturday club ride and which will lead us in a westerly direction along hwy 299 towards Arcata on the coast and we will be stopping for lunch at the Samoa Cookhouse in Samoa. For the ride back we recommend a couple of routes. Some will simply want to take hwy 299 back to Trinity Center (hey, it looks different going the other way). For those a bit more adventurous, we will be heading south along hwy 101 and then cut back east along hwy 36. As a disclaimer, Hwy 36 is a very technical road and probably one of the most difficult roads I've been on. It's extremely twist with the road narrowing down to single lanes in some area. Once you leave the coastal area, the road leads your through a maze of beautiful redwoods. It's a wonderful road with great scenery but it's not for everyone. Total ride mileage for the day will be around 300 miles going the hwy 36 route and a little less going back hwy 299. We will have Garmin routes posted in the near future.

With the recon mission behind us, I think we can speak for Mike and Ray in saying we are even more excited for the actual event and this should turn out to be a very memorable one for RCB. If you have any questions please feel free to ask.

You are correct that some of the best roads in the state are in the vicinity of this Rendezvous. I live between Highways 36 and 299 and spend a lot of time riding in the area. You outlined a very enjoyable ride to the Samoa Cookhouse and back but I think your evaluation of Highway 36 is a little harsh. I think any bike or rider can do that easily. I am much more nervous on I80 in Sacramento than these roads. I am biased towards twisty roads but think Highway 3 all the way from Hwy 36 to Scott Valley is one of the best roads in the state. If you don't like curves take 299 to Weaverville but Hwy 36 to 3 (or 36 to Wildwood Road to 3) is a fantastic ride, as is 3 north of Weaverville. If you don't ride all of Hwy 3 you missed a great road. For my riding preferences the best roads in the area are to the north of Hwy 299. Although other than Hwy 3, most of those make Highway 36 look like a superhighway. The good news is- they are all great riding roads.

You're right Chuck. The roads are as technical as you make them. Speed equals a more challenging route but go slow enough and you'll be ok. Just wanted folks to know that it's a very twisty road and caution is warranted. I myself will probably be riding two up and will not be going mach 5 with my hair on fire like we did this last weekend.

One thing I forgot to add is the water in Trinity Lake is extremely low right now and If you own a GS, you can actually do some off road riding on the lake bed itself. Old Trinity Center is uncovered right now and you can see some of the of the old artifacts.

Thanks for the input Chuck!

WOW!!! After reading the recon report, I am going to have to reconsider my decision to go to FairyTale Town that weekend instead of riding with my brothers........ :-)

Thanks for all your efforts. This is going to be a great weekend.

While perusing google maps along Hwy 3. I found Alpen Cellars about 15 miles from KOA up East Side Rd off Hwy 3. There is even street view on google maps up to the Winery. Looks like a small remote family winery and open 7 days week starting May 31st. Maybe a trip some may want to make that aren’t heading to lunch on Saturday. http://www.alpencellars.com/index.html

Hey all!
Wanted to chime in on our recon ride last weekend. We left Rocklin and took 65/70/99 to Red Bluff and picked up 36. We've ridden 36 quite a bit and I prefer it to I-5 to 299. Great bike road. FUN! When you get on 3, Hayfork is an interesting stop for a break. The folks there are quite refreshing. There was a massive litter clean up operation underway when we passed through early in the day. Spent a lot of time waving to these citizens. When we came back through MUCH later in the day, low and behold there they were still pickin up litter and still waving'. Felt like we were in a parade. There was a post by a member in regard to rating roads as far as technicality, and though I agree with Chuck about 36, I also agree with Rickyyyyy. Any road difficulty is mitigated by SLOWING DOWN and riding your ride. If one is familiar with the road then that usually changes things a bit. 36 is a hoot at a high rate of fuel consumption but should be treated with respect. If you decide to take 36 out in Red Bluff. There is a Chevron real close to the 36 cut off. You will make it easily to the Chevron on 3 before departing Weaverville. There is a little sandwich place in Platina if you want a little bite. Nice folks. Fuel was never an issue for us last weekend, but if you decide to go off on your own be mindful of your fuel. In certain areas, it CAN BE an issue. This ain't Sac.
The KOA staff were great. They want us to come there every year and went out of their way to address all of our issues. As Rickyyyy said there is 4G at this location, otherwise phone service is spotty if at all in a lot of areas. I love Manchester Beach, but it is, well, Manchester Beach. As Chuck mentioned, there are so many great ride possibilities in this area that it is SICK! You will rack up miles that weekend, but, when you get home, you will say, THAT WAS FREAKIN' COOL!

OK I'll bite! Where did I go? I've been on the list since April 3.
However the "Tammy" update of May 14 has deleted me.
So is it that I can't read lists but really I'm still there?
Did I offend the camping gods? Do I have an unpaid "list" tax?

May I please be back on my #36 spot?

Thanks

Well, I did have a planned route I put together before I realized I won't be able to make the trip.
I planned on going up back roads to Chico and heading up 32, 36, 44, and 299 through Redding and north on 3.
I'll post this route info on the web site if someone wants to take it and lead the way.

Yeah buddy, way to go Capt. Kenny. We didn't set up a group ride to Trinity. It is not a mystery getting there. Easy peasy, but I would guess that some of our members will have breakfast prior to departure. (Susie's maybe ?) Ricky and I will be leaving EARLY A.M. If you wanna tag along you can. We will be leaving from Rocklin. We will be working with a chase vehicle so it could be an adventure. Choose your poison.

Ladies and Gentlemen, hold your horses! The cavalry has arrived. We will give CPT Kenny a wonderful R&R with his family so the RCB Rocklin Division will be leading you to conquer Trinity Center. Plan for a 0800 departure on Friday. Location is TBD. Thanks for your patience.
All the way Ray!

Ken's route looked great but a group ride would be awesome too. Thanks for the info Ray.

Ok folks, if you want to follow the rowdy Rocklin group up to Trinity, we'll be clutches out at 0800 from Mel's Diner in Rocklin (from 80 take the Blue Oaks East exit off of 65 and turn left on Lonetree). There's a Chevron right next door is you need to fill up. The Garmin route will be posted soon if you'd like to download it. It should be about a 6 hour trip bringing us into Trinity around 2. We will be having a coupe of chase vehicles following so it will be a nice leisurely pace (at least until we hit 36  ). Contact me with any questions.

Thanks for putting together a route. Are you planning a lunch stop or should folks plan to bring a snack?

Thanks for asking Tammy. Let's plan on stopping in Platina for lunch. There's a little store there that serves sandwiches. Red Bluff will be the gas stop.

I was on the Rick Mayer website where he has a page on rides in Northern Cal and found the below. Not sure how current it is, but beware of CHP near Weaverville and Trinity Center

HIGHWAY 3
Second only to Highway 36 in sheer fun, this road is 132 miles with the longest straightaway being less than ½ of one mile. Get gas in Hayfork, Weaverville, or Etna. Good food at the La Grange Cafe in Weaverville. Local rumor is that Trinity County is the only county in California without a single traffic light. CHP presence heavy close to Weaverville and Trinity Center. Check out the historical marker atop Scott Mountain summit. Be prepared to use Forest Service
potties if you have to “go.”

RCB meals?

Postby Hawkster » Sat May 24, 2014 8:57 am

I know that Sat and Sun continental breakfasts are hosted by the very generous PAST PREZ and Mrs.
I may have missed this, but...
Any other RCB meals, such as Sat. eve or are we own our own? Just wanted to know what to bring.

...everyone is on his/her own for meals other than the breakfasts on Saturday and Sunday. There is a place to eat at the KOA itself and there are plenty of alternative eating spots in Weaverville and the other surrounding towns.

Hey all,
I'm going to have to skip the Trinity Lake experience due to a shoulder problem. I currently have a single cabin reserved and will be cancelling that later today.
If anyone would like me to try to sub in your name on the cabin, let me know ASAP via email "cly6897@gmail.com".
Otherwise, check for the cancellation around 3:00 this afternoon.
Have a great weekend.

Left at 7, never saw an RCB'er, missed 4 deer and a bear between KOA and Lewiston, after grazing one Saturday while fishing. Great country, great weather, and I noticed a huge uptick in the "Bring your own damn chair group". The Rocklin Gang knocked our socks off. Beautiful campground/facilities. At the last minute I got schwanzed into joining a cabin group with Rand, Mike H. & newbie Gale at "the Lodge". Uptown, but we were somewhere near Lodi. Thus I was forced to do a lot of (worth it) staggering back and forth to participate in all the harassment & tire kicking. Thanks to Gary and Linda to for their morning getgoer. Lets do'er again!

Thank you RCB for a great weekend. Our ride Sat. was awesome to Samoa Cookhouse and back, and enjoyed meeting the group. I love the twisties and I believe Sat. ride was the most I have rode in 1 day.
