We can get a preliminary head count at the July meeting. I know that a number of folks are planning to go but we haven't gotten a sign up list started. Remember, folks are making their own reservations directly with the staff at Soldier Meadows.

Steve Harris and I are going.

Please make arrangements directly with Soldier Meadows, best via web site, for your meals and whether you want a bed or tent site. Each participant is responsible for paying fees directly to Soldier Meadows for whatever you want.

We have not made final plans, but we probably will go to Fernley Thursday after work and spend the night in Fernley. We will leave for Soldier Meadows from Fernley Friday morning. There are GS friendly dirt roads from Fernley to Gerlach, and the main road to Soldier Meadows also is GS friendly. If anyone wants to discuss riding routes, please contact me directly. jackklau@comcast.net

Average temperatures in late September are pretty nice, and Soldier Meadows is cooler than the Reno area generally.

Regarding off road riding--
I was not registered, but was planning on going to SM. And if there will be four or more I will make it five.

My alternative for this date would be exploring the Carson Valley. Lots of things to do there and it is closer to home. My preference is to be with a group.

Here is a reminder for this event. I hear there are a few who tentatively are planning to go to Soldier Meadows. I ask folks who plan to attend to "sign up" here, and I encourage you to coordinate your rides.

Please make arrangements directly with Soldier Meadows, best via web site, for your meals and whether you want a bed or tent site. Each participant is responsible for making his/her own arrangements and paying fees directly to Soldier Meadows for whatever you want.

There are GS friendly dirt roads from Fernley to Gerlach, and the main road to Soldier Meadows also is GS friendly. If anyone wants to discuss riding routes or obtain GPS tracks, please contact me directly. jackklau@comcast.net

Average temperatures in late September are pretty nice, and Soldier Meadows is cooler than the Reno area generally. It also looks like they have gotten a little rain so there may be less dust.

Thanks for the video clip, Rocklin Rick. The rider must have knobbies mounted on the FJR?

Jack, got a new insert in the GS head bolt, I am planning to go to Soldier Meadows. Hopefully no mud this year. Any word on whether the dry lake bed is good for a shortcut  ?

For those going, be sure to do a short detour to check out the Fly Geyser going to or from SM. Field glasses or a telephoto lens will help.

It's real. Just past the SM turn off on the paved road out of Gerlach.

The paved road turns to dirt about 3-5 miles from the SM turn off. I'm not sure if the geyser is still on the paved part. I rode past it not knowing it was there. The main dirt road was better than most of our paved roads a couple years ago.

There is a back way into SM if you keep going north on that main dirt road. There is a turn to the right that you make. The main dirt road is GS friendly. The cut across to SM may not be GS friendly, depending on conditions (a couple silty areas if really dry, or could be muddy if they have had a lot of rain within 24-48 hours of being in the area). Roy, Doc, Greg Gibson, Chuck and others could ride this section on their GS's without a lot of trouble if that provides any measuring stick. I would NOT recommend the cut across for a new dirt rider or anyone on a 1200 GS or 800 GS unless the rider has solid dirt skills.

I think I still have the track for this route if anyone is interested.

Regrettably, I now must work Friday and Saturday so I cannot go. I'm not sure if Steve still is planning to go. I know others are. Please coordinate your riding groups here.

Feel free to send me an e-mail if you want a copy of my GPS tracks for the area as I am happy to share them. Send me an e-mail at jackklau@comcast.net .

Jack

P.S. There are no alcoholic beverages at SM to my knowledge so pack it in as we have done in the past.

Here is the scoop. I left out a description of features unique to this geyser and why you really need to try to see it. The property is gated hence the need for field glasses for the best view. If you see an old guy in the area it may be the owner. If polite and nice, he might open the gate for a quick visit.

Fly Geyser

Located on a gated parcel of private property within the million-acre Black Rock Desert, Fly Geyser is not a natural phenomenon. It was created accidentally in 1964 from a geothermal test well inadequately capped. The scalding water has erupted from the well since then, leaving calcium carbonate deposits growing at the rate of several inches per year.
