RCB California Saddlesore 1000 June 8

On Wednesday we ride to dinner and on Saturday we ride to breakfast. Those and any other rides are coordinated and (sometimes) reported here.

Whether you're a first timer or a seasoned Iron Butt rider this is your chance to earn a CA Saddlesore 1000, all 1000 miles done in the State of California, done within 24 hours. 10 riders are needed to qualify for an IBA group ride (a huge advantage for the riders as I take care of all the paperwork), so if you're really serious about accomplishing this challenging ride please add your name to the list below:

The route is going to be starting at the 49er truck stop at 4:30 AM, going south on I-5 to Kettleman City, across 41 to Paso Robles, north on 101 to 280 and 19th avenue to the Golden Gate Bridge, north on 101 to Eureka, across 299 to Redding, and then south on I-5 back to the 49er truck stop. The only paperwork I'll need will be a gas receipt from both Kettleman City and Eureka, I'll take care of the rest. It's about 1052 miles and should take between 17 and 19 hours. I know that going through the city can be a pain, but being a Saturday should result in less commuter traffic, the S.F. City college won't be in session on 19th ave, and the bridge is the no pay direction, so it should be relatively smooth. Hope to see you there Nathan!

This route looks amazingly similar to the Phil Wood torture route.
I'll have to adjust a few things to make this date, so I'm a probably!

Hello folks,

I've just rejoined RCB.

I ride with Nathan and figure this will be a good tune up for my ride to Maine, by way of Florida, a few weeks later. I've done the distance and time several times, now I figure I might as well get the certificate. :D

I have a schedule for 15 minute stops with times approximated for speed, whether you are travelling at 60, 65, 70 or 75. It is only a suggestion for when to stop, each person needs to decide on his/her own how far to go between stops. The riders can use this to see how far ahead/behind they are on the schedule so they can plan accordingly and to let me know when to expect them back at the end stop. I certainly don't expect the riders to ride as a solid group, as I said before the BB1500 last year it is better to NOT ride as a group as you could overwhelm a gas stop and spend too much time waiting for a pump. I'll post that schedule here on the forum soon so you can look it over.

For those who are planning to accomplish this ride please arrive before 4:30 AM so that I can document your names, odometers, bikes, IBA # (if you already have one), and give out maps and route info before you go. You could also use the time to gas up there. See you all there bright (actually dark  ) and early!

Is there a way we get a Garmin route? I would make one but I for everyone don't have the N. America maps installed on my Mapsource.

The Garmin route I've been working on for the ride is available here in .gpx format:

https://www.dropbox.com/s/72rslt9s0tsxn ... 201000.GPX

This route omits stops in Gustine and Paso Robles that are shown in the spreadsheet Fred shared. I don't need them for fuel, so am planning to only do these stops:

Start at Sacramento 49er Travel Plaza
Chevron, Kettleman City (215 miles)
Chevron, Morgan Hill (190 miles)
Chevron, Cloverdale (162 miles)
Chevron, Eureka (197 miles)
Chevron, Redding (137 miles)
End at Sacramento 49er Travel Plaza (160 miles)

My K1300S has a highway range between 200 and 250 miles, depending on speed, consistency of speed, wind speed/direction, and luggage profile. I expect to maintain an average speed around 75 to 77 for the initial leg from Sacramento to Kettleman City, and should have no problem with the 215 miles. The leg through the SF Bay area is one of the shorter ones, accounting for the likely traffic impact on average speed consistency, which reduces fuel economy a bit.

I've learned that managing my water intake is more challenging than fuel. If I over-hydrate or drink too much coffee, I'm unable to go the distance my motorcycle is able to without needing to stop. Of course under-hydrating can be a problem also, particularly when temperatures are above 90 F.

Feedback/suggestions are welcome.

I've just uploaded a newer version of the route that fixes a couple of really stupid mistakes that would cause a few unwelcome u-turns between Morgan Hill and San Francisco. So if you downloaded the .gpx file then you'll want to get this latest version.

I've made a few additional edits to the .gpx route, the same link has the file:

https://www.dropbox.com/s/72rslt9s0tsxn ... GPX?v=1mci

There were just a few minor edits, plus I moved a fuel stop from Cloverdale to Hopland to reduce the mileage before the required fuel stop in Eureka, balanced by a slightly longer leg from Morgan Hill through San Francisco.

I've gone over the route multiple times and I think this is the final version for me. Feel free to use it, adjust fuel stops as appropriate for your bike and needs.

We've got a scorcher forecast for the weekend.

And I've got to just point out that Fred is a genius, or at least an incredibly savvy meteorological forecaster. He cleverly anticipated the hot temperatures and put us on a route that has us in the hottest parts during dark, and in the coolest spots throughout the day.

Really looking forward to this ride.

Well, that was my plan, but it looks like it's still going to be plenty hot when you hit Redding. You should be going through there at somewhere between 6:00 and 8:00 PM, but the sun will be going down and it should cool some as you head towards Sacramento. And Mike is right, STAY HYDRATED!

Mike: You are more than welcome to join the group Saturday! Just show up at the 49er Truck Stop at 4:15 AM so that I can document your odometer and other vitals beforetaking off at 4:30. If you want the IBA pin, certificate, license plate frame, etc. then bring along a check made out to RCB for $40 (member price) or $45 for non members. I'll take care of everything else, all you'll have to do is ride. Looking forward to seeing you there!

Probably not much in the way of too cool temperatures on Saturday. Heat will be an issue between San Francisco and Eureka, and Redding to Sacramento.

Here's the Weather Underground hourly forecasts for my planned fuel stops on the route (link to my .gpx is in an earlier post in this thread):

I've got a cooling vest, but not sure if I will use it. Using it for the route north of San Francisco where it gets hot before Eureka means probably two extra stops (one to put on the vest when temps reach the mid-90's, another to take it off as temps drop again while approaching Eureka) as the stops don't align with planned fuel stops. Having a cooling vest on after it gets warm on the way to Redding means at least one additional stop, maybe two if the temps cool down after sundown while going south on 5 to Sacramento. I definitely don't want the cooling vest on when temps drop.

I will probably bring it so I can stop and put it on if needed. But what I will probably do is during fuel stops, when it's hot, wet down the sleeves and torso of my LDComfort shirt. I've done this on previous long rides with 100+ temps with acceptable results.

A tip for the cooling vest, get one of the two gallon zip-locks (you can get them at most grocery stores), and bring a few extra liter bottles of water. When you need to soak the vest, put the vest into the ziplock, pour some water in, zip closed, shake and mix to thoroughly soak the vest, then remove. You can do this even from the roadside, no need for a sink and running water. I did this on a Death Valley ride in August 2008, had to stop and re-soak the vest every 30 to 45 minutes due to the extreme heat and dryness... but the vest was really awesome in that 125+ degree blast furnace.

Rich, know of the ziploc bag trick and i may put a coupla bottles of h2o in the tank bag and hydrate the vest through the mesh jacket on the run. never tried it b4 but what the hell! Also, I've been on the coast when it's been toasty here and if the fog get's sucked in, it get's me cold pronto. Ain't gonna happen bro! Packin' the panniers so I'm taken my wardrobe for a ride! I'm sorry this ride ended up being on the hottest day of the year, it's an additional challenge to an already challenging day, but if you recall the UBS1000 we did a couple of years ago was also about the same temps through Nevada, and everybody made it OK. I'm going to ask every one to call me on my cell when they reach Redding, that way I'll know they're all right and when they'll be finishing. That could be a good time to put on your cooling vest for the hottest part of the ride.

Congratulations to Rich Gay, Nathan Fender, Scott Bement, Kim Rydalch, Rick Kilton, Mike Robles, Steve Bonilla, Mike Ryan, and Dave Prosinos for completing a difficult and HOT! CA Saddlesore 1000. Roy Meade started with us but suffered a mechanical problem and had to trailer his bike home from Salinas. All finishers were within 40 minutes of each other at the end averaging 18.5 hours for the ride, about a 55 mph average including stops. Good job by all!

To the Iron Butt finishers:

I don't know whether to be more impressed by your intrepid spirit (for attempting this ordeal on the hottest day on record) or embarrassed by your stupidity (for attempting this ordeal on the hottest day on record)! After careful and lengthy reflection, I have decided to be impressed by your intrepid spirit!

CONGRATULATIONS, you are better men than me, Gunga Din(s).

Cheers and glad you are all safe and sound. Have a cold one on the Club.

Cheers,

Next time I think I'll organize a Saddle Sore ride...that way I can do the meet and greet and then stay home! Thanks Fred for making me want to over cook myself just for a California only 1000 certificate.

My outside temp guage on my R1200RT sometimes looked like a video game because the numbers changed so fast. 65F over the Golden Gate bridge and then in less than 30 minutes was 102F passing through Santa Rosa. When I gassed up in Cloverdale it read 116F and then spent a long time at 112F before descending to around 65F in Eureka. From Redding at 8:30 pm it was 102F, but getting dark so it felt less intense. Near Sacramento it was in the mid 70's and refreshing at 10 pm. My shoulders are a bit sore and my hands and wrists are sore from gripping the handlebars tightly. It's amazing how much ground one can cover in 18+ hours. The good thing was that the most eventful happenings during the trip was filling up the gas tank and selecting a candy bar to inhale. I didn't see one single wild animal attempting to make my acquaintance during the entire event!

Congratulations to all the participants and thank you Fred!

Sorry about that Scott; maybe next year we'll do a BB1500 Gold together, possibly on the 4th of July. Stay tuned.

Well I can scratch that one off the bucket list now. Thanks to Fred for setting up this ride. We had fun even though it was on during the hottest day of the year. We braved the smell of the cattle farms houses on I5, dodged cardboard boxes and kids scooters in the middle of the road, trudged through Bay area traffic, avoided pirates from the Redwood Run motorcycle rally and the police that were observing them. We had gas stations that didn't want to accept our payment (Chevron pumps were down at almost every stop so we had to pay inside), and a storm of bugs between Redding and Sac of biblical proportions. But after everything was said and done, we can now say that we belong to a strange fellowship of riders who are a little off their rockers and share the title of Iron Butt'ers.

I'm fairly serious about a BB1500 Gold (1500 miles in 24 hours) for next year. We may have to have some one else be the ride certifier since I would be riding it. Further research is necessary; I'm looking at routes and timing along with IBA rules on a group ride of this nature.

Hey Fred! Sounds like u might have volunteer starter for a BB1500!
To echo what has been written. I have NEVER been on a ride with such temperature swings. Felt like I was in a Broadway play with all the wardrobe changes. We wore everything we brought.....a coupla times. It was a crap shoot on gear decisions. It was quite a speed bump riding the bay. Like seein that hole in my mirrors! It was quite a ride! Cold, hot, cold, hot, pirates, the Po Po, bugs from hell. We could barely see when we arrived in Sac. I thought I would only do this once! I swore I would only do it once! Now that it is over, would I do it again?.............Yeah......probably! If you have never done one you really should. It will test you as a rider. Twenty miles or so outta Sac. my tushie was tellin me it was time for a man soda! Wouldn't trade the experience for anything. When I hit the garage about 12:30 a.m. I thought to myself, THAT WAS FREAKIN COOL!. Hope Roy made it home ok and that his problem was easily remedied. Sorry we couldn't help Roy. Thank You Fred for all you did and congrats to my fellow Iron Butt Bros. You tough guys!

As a late addition and not an active club member, I would first of all like to thank Fred for allowing me to join in, and for all the coordination he has provided, thank you.

When I pulled up that early morning I was sure that I had brought a knife to a gun fight. A F800GS with stock seat is certainly not the ideal for an SS1000! After the first leg of the ride I was convinced that solo I was not going to make the distance. Fortunately, Rick and Mike (my eternal gratitude) were gracious enough to allow me to tag along with them. You guys rock, and what a pace!

This Iron Butt was fired in the 113 + degree fire that was endured between Santa Rosa and Willits, and quenched in the low 60 degree temps of Eureka. To add a final insult, we were assaulted by swarms of blinding insects on our way home from Redding, but by then the pain of the board my ass was planted on had overcame the fact that I couldn't see and I just wanted to finish!

Again, my thanks to Fred and especially to Rick and Mike for allowing me this awesome experience. Hope to ride with you again.

Mike, I am sure I can speak for Ricky when I say, you are welcomed to ride with us anytime. It was a smokin(pun?) hot ride. Excellent job on a crappy stock BMW seat. Mike

The letter to the IBA has been mailed and I think it will be two months at least until the certificates are sent back. Any sooner I will let every one know. I would like to present them to the finishers at a club meeting if possible, so stay tuned.

The Club would be honored to host the Iron Butt certificate awards ceremony at an upcoming monthly meeting. I will talk to the folks at Suzie's and see if we can get them to turn on the heat and all the ovens full blast so we can get the meeting room up to 110 degrees to replicate the conditions under which you lunatics undertook the ride!

Cheers and congrats to all!
