Eureka Ride

On Wednesday we ride to dinner and on Saturday we ride to breakfast. Those and any other rides are coordinated and (sometimes) reported here.

For those of you going to Eureka next month and are staying at the Super 8, make sure you call them directly at 707 725 2888 to make reservations. Mention my name or the River City Beemers and you should get your room for $70 per night. If you aren't going to Eureka, then you should attend Phil Challinor's classes at A&S that weekend, a pretty good alternative.

Sounds like fun ... provided the snow stays away. Is there a sign-up form?

I haven't started a sign up list yet, but it looks like you've started one for me. All I really need is a general idea of how many for dinner Saturday night so I can make reservations, and who we are expecting to pick up along the way. So add your name to Phil's list and let me know if you're going to meet up with us in Marysville or somewhere else, otherwise we'll be meeting at Susie's and leaving at 9:00 AM. See you all there.

Saturday’s dinner at the Cookhouse for sure. Other than that I don’t know if I’ll ride the whole way with the group, meet up on the way, or just see you all up there. Whichever, it’s my responsibility to meet up, or catch up. So if you don’t hear from me, don’t worry about it.

A little intel regarding the Wildwood store from the Pashnit site. The owner says 91-octane is available:

Just spoke to reservations at the Fortuna Super 8 (http://www.fortunasuper8motel.com/) and while they still have rooms, they're all upstairs. All the downstairs rooms are gone.

The motel has eight (8) RCBers signed up, and availability for the weekend still looks good for any last minute (procrastinating) attendees ...

... and I'm thinking my Saturday destination is the Lost Coast and Shelter Cove ...

Here are a couple of routes Fred and I have been discussing.

http://www.rcb.org/Routes/Fortuna2009.pdf
and
http://www.rcb.org/Routes/Fortunavia65.pdf

Fred will be taking the second one, stopping in Marysville to pick up a few riders.
I may go the first route, which goes by way of 45, and joins the second route at Hwy 20 W. of Marysville and S. of Colusa. Both routes have a planned stop at the Chevron in Colusa.

Splitting into 2 groups may be a good idea to keep the lunch bunches smaller, for one thing. :)

If there's enough interest in the first route, I'll be willing to lead that bunch, otherwise I may just stick with Fred going through Marysville.

Of course, if you want to just follow one of these routes on your own, that works, too.

Ken, thanks for the options! I'm looking forward to Hwy 36 more than anything so I'll go with either group. Or I'll go with the smaller group to balance things out!

I've been playing with Saturday options and I think I'm going with http://snipurl.com/fyjc1

Starting from the Fortuna motel, it's 30 mins of southbound on Hwy101 until the Avenue of the Giants (Hwy254) turnoff just south of Stafford. Then along the Avenue of the Giants until the Mattole exit. Through the Humboldt Redwood State Park to Honeydew and then left to Ettersburg and finally to the Tide Inn in Shelter Cove for lunch. (If it's not there, or not open any longer, there are several other options in Shelter Cove.)

After lunch I'll retrace my route to Honeydew and turn left to Marijuana Heaven, uhh, Petrolia and on to the Lost Coast - The most western point in California and the site of California's Sugarloaf Mountain. ;-)

The entire route is only 160 miles, but it's a good five hours - More if you include photo, nature and lunch stops - And some of the prettiest scenery in Northern California! Cameras are a must. I'll welcome any company.

(All the roads are paved, but if someone's looking for some GS roads while up there, I have a two recommendations, Usal and King's Peak/Horse Mountain.)

I'll be heading up Saturday morning so add me to the list for Samoa Cook House. Grandfatherly duties prevent riding on Friday. If there's anyone else who would like a riding companion for Saturday, feel free to contact me and we'll arrange a meeting place and start time.

It looks like my forecast of 25 for dinner at the cookhouse is about right. I don't think a few more or less will make much of a difference to them. See you all there!

Saturday Ride to Shelter Cove - Plan B

Postby woodp » Thu Apr 16, 2009 1:19 pm

There are five restaurants in Shelter Cove - Three are still on winter dinner-only schedules, the deli burned down and the pizza shop serves breakfast until noon. As far as I'm concerned, nothing's suitable.

So, rather than lunch in Shelter Cove, I'm heading 23 miles back to Garberville for lunch (Italian deli), then back up 101 and the south end of the Avenue of the Giants, left turn on Mattole Road back to Honeydew and then the original route through Petrolia to the Lost Coast to Ferndale and the Motel.

Basically a big figure-8 - It brings the total mileage to 200 miles, but you'll work for most of those miles - Lots of left and right turns! The reward is that now you get the entire Avenue of the Giants and a decent lunch. On Google Maps, the new route looks like

http://snipurl.com/g1hkq

All roads are paved and decent RT/LT roads although some potholes exist along the Lost Coast. I'll be leaving at 8:30-ish and returning 4:30-ish if anyone wants to tag along.
