Scanning for traffic

May 15, 2012 - There's a lane splitting thread running in our forum right now - Participants are reviewing the benefits and risk/reward equations, and so far it seems everyone has a different opinion. Although it's not specifically mentioned, all the participants would agree that scanning for traffic is key to managing the risk.

MSF has put together a Motion Induced Blindness page that demonstrates what happens to your peripheral vision if you don't scan, but instead stare or focus on just one spot. Take the test yourself and see if you aren't susceptible as well.

US Military pilots are taught to "keep eyes moving and head on a swivel" to prevent focusing on any one spot. It's probably a good idea for motorcycle pilots as well.
